In Memory of Actress Kirin Kiki
Still Walking is a very personal work of Japanese film master, Hirokazu Kore-eda. The film marked the first time he worked with Japan’s renown actor, Kirin Kiki, who will recurrently play key roles in his films hereafter. At the end of summer, Ryota Yokoyama (Hiroshi Abe) visits his parents with his wife and his stepson. Ryota had always been compared to his elder brother who died 15 years before, and he feels resentment towards his father and is reluctant to spend the night at the family home. The house is full again: with father (Yoshio Harada), a retired doctor, the mother, (Kirin Kiki) who stayed at home to look after the family, as well as Ryota’s sister’s family—also visiting. Nothing seems to have changed on the surface, but the parents have certainly aged. They each make a small promise with them before leaving—but none of them are kept.
